Formula 1’s high-speed, wall-lined thriller in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, delivered an electrifying qualifying session for the 2024 season. Red Bull’s reigning champion, Max Verstappen, once again asserted his dominance with a commanding pole position, leaving Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and his own teammate, Sergio Perez, in his wake. But the surprise of the weekend was undoubtedly the debut of Ferrari’s rookie sensation, Oliver Bearman.
Verstappen’s Untouchable Pace
The Dutchman has been in imperious form all weekend in Jeddah. He looked one with his RB20 throughout practice and carried that momentum into qualifying. Delivering two scorching laps that were ultimately untouchable, he clinched his second pole of the young season with a blistering time of 1m 27.472s, a whole 0.3 seconds faster than Leclerc.
Verstappen expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating: “A very good day so far. We improved the car a little bit overnight, and that gave me confidence to attack the high-speed corners. In qualifying, it’s pretty crazy how fast you go around here. I had a lot of fun, and the car was behaving really well.”
Ferrari’s Rookie Shines, Sainz Sidelined
Thrust into the spotlight due to Carlos Sainz’s last-minute absence due to appendicitis, 18-year-old Oliver Bearman stepped up in spectacular fashion. The young British driver wasted no time getting to grips with the Ferrari, showing his potential from the first lap in final practice. While he narrowly missed progressing to Q3 by a mere 0.036s, a stunning 11th place finish on debut is a remarkable achievement.

Bearman’s poise and confidence behind the wheel certainly turned heads, making him one to watch this season and in the years to come.
Alonso and McLaren Make Strides
Fernando Alonso continues to demonstrate that age is just a number. The double world champion showed superb pace, snatching a fantastic P4 on the grid with a well-timed tow from Hamilton’s Mercedes. This marks a significant improvement for Aston Martin, who struggled mightily in Bahrain.
McLaren also appears to have turned a corner. Oscar Piastri, on his second outing for the team, managed to outqualify his seasoned teammate Lando Norris. The papaya cars will lock out the third row of the grid, McLaren’s highest starting positions at the lightning-fast Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
Mercedes Struggles, Alpine’s Woes Continue
Mercedes will be disappointed with their performance, with Hamilton and Russell only managing P7 and P8 respectively. The Silver Arrows seem to be grappling with setup issues, especially in the high-speed sections where they lack the pace and stability of Red Bull and Ferrari.
It’s been a dismal start to the season for Alpine. Both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were eliminated in Q1, a far cry from last season’s form. The team’s struggles with their new car paint a worrying picture as they seek to return to midfield competitiveness.
The Grid and What to Expect
The starting grid for Saturday’s race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit shapes up as follows:

- Verstappen (Red Bull)
- Leclerc (Ferrari)
- Perez (Red Bull)
- Alonso (Aston Martin)
- Piastri (McLaren)
- Norris (McLaren)
- Russell (Mercedes)
- Hamilton (Mercedes)
- Tsunoda (AlphaTauri)
- Stroll (Aston Martin)
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix promises another action-packed race around the unforgiving street circuit. Verstappen will be the overwhelming favorite, but Jeddah’s penchant for drama and safety cars could shake things up. The Ferraris are expected to push him hard, while McLaren, Aston Martin, and surprise packages like AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda could all feature in the mix for top spots.
