It’s no secret, Mercedes has faced its fair share of hardship in Formula 1 over the last two seasons. Since the dawn of the turbo-hybrid era in 2014, Mercedes absolutely dominated F1, but things have become much more difficult recently.

The question lingers – can Mercedes recapture their form and rise to the top once again in 2024?

A Legend Exits, But a Future Leader Remains

There’s no question that Lewis Hamilton has been a pivotal asset to the Mercedes team. During the squad’s reign of dominance, he secured six of his seven driver’s titles with them.

With Hamilton gearing up for his final season as a Silver Arrow before his unexpected leap to Ferrari in 2025, this year offers a unique dynamic. Can Hamilton go out with a bang, or will the transition distract the team?

The spotlight also falls on George Russell, who needs to show that he can rise as a team leader during these changing times. Russell faces the pressure of potentially finding himself with a new teammate in 2025 – making this a potentially pivotal year for the young driver.

Mercedes Under Pressure in 2023

2023 proved that Mercedes still had significant strides to make after encountering substantial difficulties in 2022.

While they ultimately came out ahead of Ferrari by securing 2nd place in the constructor’s championship, they didn’t offer a significant challenge to Red Bull’s dominance. Despite struggles, there were a few moments of brilliance – like Hamilton’s stunning pole position in Hungary.

The team hopes the significant design changes to the W15 they will race in 2024, along with some shifts in team hierarchy, will be just the push they need to start closing the gap to Red Bull. Will Mercedes’ changes offer significant improvement to their competitiveness in 2024?

History Favors a Mercedes Comeback

The Mercedes name in Formula 1 goes back way further than 2014. This same organization – through various transformations – has a reputation for overcoming setbacks. Think back to the late 1960s when Tyrrell built them up before it was sold and rebranded.

However, their modern F1 success truly began as Brawn GP back in 2009. That dominant season caught the eye of Mercedes, who purchased the team, and that laid the foundation for their eight consecutive titles secured across the turbo-hybrid era. Clearly, it’s an organization that doesn’t stay down for long.

2024: A Year of Transition and Opportunity?

While Hamilton’s departure looms in the distance, 2024 should be viewed as a crucial year for Mercedes to regain their footing. There will likely be more shake ups behind the scenes as the team prepares for Hamilton’s exit.

Team Principal Toto Wolff has compared Mercedes’ journey back to dominance as scaling Mount Everest – a lofty ambition. Mercedes certainly has the resources and pedigree to overcome their struggles, but Red Bull presents a formidable opponent.

Regardless of how they perform, their fight for the title this season will undoubtedly be thrilling. This year might not be about world titles but about showing forward progress. Every new part, every strategy adjustment, and every lap where they make their rivals nervous is a win.

Can Mercedes make it all the way back? No one knows, but it will be exciting to watch, regardless of which team you cheer for!
