The Formula 1 teams arrived at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain for the familiar testbed of car design. With the removal of the final chicane and the introduction of a super-fast double right to end the lap, drivers were delighted with the changes. Upgrades were brought by seven teams, and data gathering tools such as aero rakes and flo-viz paint were used to analyze the new parts. Let’s dive into the details and see which teams have made progress and who faces challenges.

Red Bull’s Dominance

Red Bull set an ominous tone in the practice sessions, with their RB19 proving to be frighteningly quick right out of the box. They led the field by nearly a second in the first practice, which was slightly reduced in the second practice. However, their commanding position was evident when the data was analyzed. Red Bull enjoys a 0.33s advantage over the field in terms of one-lap pace. Their race pace is equally impressive, with a notable advantage in medium-speed corners. Championship leader Max Verstappen expressed his comfort in the car and positive outlook, which signals trouble for his rivals.

Aston Martin’s Strong Performance

Aston Martin showed promising pace in the practice sessions, hinting at a potential podium finish. While they were third-best on low fuel runs, Fernando Alonso demonstrated excellent performance in the final sector. If he had hooked up his best mini sectors, he would have been just a fraction behind Verstappen. Aston Martin’s advantage over Red Bull in high-speed turns gives them an edge. Even if outright victory may be challenging, Alonso’s performance suggests he should not be underestimated.

Ferrari’s Mixed Results

Ferrari introduced upgrades in Spain, making it difficult to assess their true potential. While they continue to be a threat to Red Bull and Aston Martin in slow-speed corners, medium and high-speed turns pose a challenge. Both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were around three tenths off the pace in practice. The data indicates a competitive performance in slow-speed corners, but they will need to overcome difficulties in faster sections of the track.

Alpine’s Impressive Form

Esteban Ocon carried his stellar performance from Monaco to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Alpine driver displayed confidence early on, going flat-out through Turn 9 in FP1. Alpine excels in the straights and leads the way in high-speed turns. Their lap time performance is on par with Mercedes, and although they drop to fifth in race simulations, improvements are expected overnight. Alpine has been recognized as a threat by several drivers, making them strong contenders for Q3 and solid points this weekend.

Mercedes’ Challenges

Lewis Hamilton expressed concern about a difficult weekend ahead, anticipating a struggle to secure a top-10 position in qualifying. Based on practice sessions, Mercedes is on par with Alpine but lacks a significant advantage over Haas and AlphaTauri. Their race pace seems more promising, with Hamilton stating it doesn’t look “terrible.” However, improvements are needed in terms of straight-line speed to make progress during the race. The recent corner change might facilitate overtaking opportunities, but Mercedes must work on their pace to capitalize on them.

The Spanish Grand Prix practice sessions provided intriguing insights into the teams’ performances. Red Bull showcased dominance, with a commanding lead over their competitors. Aston Martin displayed strong potential for a podium finish, and Ferrari’s upgrades presented mixed results. Alpine continued their impressive form from Monaco, while Mercedes faced challenges and sought improvements to secure a competitive position. As the race unfolds, it remains to be seen how these teams will capitalize on their strengths and address their weaknesses. Tune in for qualifying which begins in less than 2 hours from now, to know who wins the battle for pole position.
