The 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix kicked off the Formula One season with a bang as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen cruised to victory over teammate Sergio Perez. The reigning champion had a solid start and stretched his lead to eventually win by more than 10 seconds. Perez completed the one-two finish for Red Bull with both drivers on similar soft-soft-hard tyre strategies.

The race got off to a dramatic start as Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll made a lunge on his teammate Fernando Alonso into Turn 4, causing a collision that allowed both Mercedes to pass. Ferrari’s hopes of a podium finish were dashed when Charles Leclerc retired on Lap 41 due to an engine issue. However, Alonso put in a brilliant performance, producing stunning overtakes on Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz to take third place on the podium.

Fernando Alonso bags the 99th podium of his career.

Carlos Sainz settled for fourth, holding off a brief challenge from Hamilton, who finished fifth. Stroll made an admirable recovery from his wrist injury and finished sixth, while George Russell was undercut by Stroll’s Aston Martin in the second pit stop and finished seventh. Valtteri Bottas capitalised on poor starts from his rivals and finished eighth for Alfa Romeo, while Pierre Gasly recovered from P20 for Alpine, pitting three times, to finish ninth. Alex Albon finished tenth for Williams after a great start, narrowly beating Yuki Tsunoda for the final point.

Rookie Logan Sargeant had a solid debut, battling with Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu to take 12th place, while Zhou pitted on the penultimate lap of the race to promote Kevin Magnussen to P13. Nyck de Vries took P14 on his AlphaTauri debut, leaving Nico Hulkenberg 15th with a five-second penalty. Zhou was classified 16th for Alfa Romeo, while Lando Norris endured a tough race, with a slow pit stop seeing him drop down the order, and a last-lap pit stop for soft tyres left him at the bottom of the standings.

Oscar Piastri’s F1 debut ended early as McLaren woes continue.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon had a catastrophic start to the season, copping a series of penalties for lining up incorrectly on the grid, serving his penalty inaccurately, and speeding in the pit lane. Alpine ultimately decided to retire him late on.

In conclusion, the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix was an exciting start to the Formula One season, with Verstappen dominating the race as Perez took second place to ensure the perfect start for Red Bull and Alonso producing a stunning performance to take third place on the podium. With the unpredictable nature of the sport, it remains to be seen how the rest of the season will play out, but fans are sure to be in for a thrilling ride.
