Formula 1 rolls on, and after an exciting season opener in Bahrain, the teams head to Jeddah for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This high-speed street circuit promises another spectacular show under the lights, and there are several key storylines to keep an eye on.

The Front-Running Picture

With 24 races and diverse circuits, each team needs a car adaptable to various track characteristics. While Red Bull looked dominant in Bahrain, it’s unclear which teams will excel in Jeddah.

Max Verstappen believes Red Bull’s RB20 might be well-suited to Jeddah, a sentiment echoed by Carlos Sainz, who expects McLaren and Red Bull to be competitive based on their 2023 performance.

This race will be the first real test to gauge the relative strengths and weaknesses of each car compared to the Bahrain GP.

Can Perez Repeat His 2023 Victory?

The 2024 season began similarly to 2023, with Verstappen winning in Bahrain and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc facing reliability issues. However, Verstappen faced qualifying troubles in last year’s Saudi Arabian GP, allowing Sergio Perez to take the pole and eventually win the race.

With Perez showing strong pace on street circuits last year, it will be interesting to see if he can challenge for victory again this weekend. A win for Perez would be a significant confidence boost and a potential statement against Verstappen.

Driver Tensions at Red Bull

Team orders and driver tensions are already simmering at Red Bull. During the Bahrain GP, Yuki Tsunoda initially ignored a team order to let Daniel Ricciardo pass, leading to frustration and a post-race altercation.

Whether this issue has been addressed remains to be seen, but it could resurface if the Red Bull teammates find themselves battling closely on track again this weekend.

Cooling Under the Jeddah Heat

While the Bahrain GP was surprisingly cool, the forecast for Jeddah predicts much higher temperatures, exceeding 30°C during the day and 25°C at night. This will pose a significant challenge for power unit cooling, a concern already raised by Mercedes and Williams in Bahrain.

All teams will be working hard to determine the necessary cooling levels for Jeddah, and how they address this challenge could be a critical factor in performance.

The F1 Academy Debuts

The 2024 F1 Academy season kicks off alongside the Formula 2 and 3 races in Jeddah. This year, the Academy features increased F1 team involvement, with ten drivers sporting the livery of their affiliated teams.

With talented drivers and official partner cars, the F1 Academy is set to be an exciting addition to the support card throughout the season.

The 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix promises to be another thrilling chapter in the F1 season, with battles for supremacy, driver rivalries, and technological challenges all in play.
