The 2024 Formula 1 season has kicked off in Bahrain, and the opening practice sessions have thrown up some major surprises. Mercedes, far from the frontrunners during pre-season testing, has emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Red Bull, the reigning champions, are no longer a shoo-in for pole and victory. If the early running is anything to go by, this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix could be one of the most exciting season openers in recent memory!

Mercedes Turn Up the Heat

Let’s cut to the chase: No one saw Mercedes topping the timesheets in FP2. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell stunned the paddock with a surprise 1-2, outpacing even the mighty Red Bulls. But just how genuine is this pace? It’s been suggested that Mercedes turned up the engine power for that session, making their straight-line speed deceptive.

However, the data doesn’t lie. Mercedes are genuinely within striking distance of Red Bull come qualifying. They’re still a little behind in the all-important race pace analysis, but the gap isn’t huge. Hamilton himself admitted that their single-lap pace was cause for concern after testing, but all that seems to have changed. Could we have an actual three-way battle for the front row of the grid?

Red Bull Playing It Cool

Max Verstappen, the reigning world champ, seemed surprisingly unconcerned about finishing outside the top five in FP2. It’s typical Red Bull sandbagging, right? There might be some truth to that, but with the team focusing intensely on race pace simulations, Verstappen may have a secret weapon come race day.

Our analysis suggests Red Bull still holds a slight edge in qualifying, but their race pace advantage is significant. Verstappen’s low fuel degradation was remarkable, showing Red Bull’s ability to look after those delicate Pirelli tires could be a massive advantage in the desert heat. Hold off on writing them off just yet.

Ferrari: The Tire Whisperers

Last year, Ferrari were qualifying rockets that ultimately crumbled under the pressure of race day due to tire woes. This year, the story has flipped. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz seem to have tamed the tire degradation beast, putting in strong long runs without dramatically falling off the pace like in seasons past.

While Ferrari may have sacrificed some pure qualifying pace, their newfound race pace is formidable. Their consistent times suggest they’ll be a force to be reckoned with on Sunday. Could Leclerc or Sainz secure a podium, or with clever strategy, maybe even threaten Red Bull for a win? Don’t be surprised if the answer is yes.

Best of the Rest – A Two-Team Battle

McLaren and Aston Martin are locked in a fierce fight for the unofficial “best of the rest” title. The two teams have been neck and neck all through testing and in Bahrain practice sessions. Aston Martin might have been a tad quicker, but Alonso’s impressive long runs show they’re not to be underestimated. The team that gets those tricky midfield strategies perfected could regularly be in the hunt for solid points.

VCARB: The Dark Horse Lurking in the Shadows

VCARB, Red Bull’s sister team, has been flying under the radar. Their pre-season form was overshadowed by technical woes, but FP2 provided a glimmer of hope. Daniel Ricciardo looks comfortable, and Tsunoda, despite his challenges, senses an opportunity. Could this be the season AlphaTauri finally unlocks its potential and consistently scores big points?
