In an exciting qualifying session for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez claimed the pole position at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, after his teammate and championship leader Max Verstappen dropped out in Q2 due to technical problems. Verstappen had been the favorite for pole position, having led the way in all practice sessions before the start of qualifying. However, a driveshaft issue during Q2 meant that Verstappen would start Sunday’s race from 15th on the grid.
Perez capitalized on Verstappen’s absence, posting a time of 1m 28.265 in the decisive Q3 phase to claim his second successive pole in the Kingdom. He was followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who will lose ten places due to an engine penalty. Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin, who have had a strong start to the season, jumped up to the front row.
The lead Mercedes of George Russel, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, and Lance Stroll completed the top seven. Alpine had a much stronger qualifying performance, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly finishing in seventh and 10th place, respectively. Lewis Hamilton took eighth in his Mercedes, and rookie scar Piastri impressed by finishing in ninth place in his McLaren.
Haas and Alfa Romeo were unable to make it over the second qualifying hurdle, with Nico Hulkenberg ending up 11th, followed by Zhou Guanyu, Kevin Magnussen, and Valtteri Bottas. Verstappen completed the list of drivers to drop out in Q2, amid his costly issues.
Alpha Tauri lost both of their cars in Q1, with Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries taking P16 and P18, respectively. Alex Albon was the lead Williams in 17th place, splitting up the two Alpha Tauris. Lando Norris was the biggest name to drop out in Q1 after hitting the Turn 27 wall and picking up steering damage that could not be fixed.
The qualifying session was a messy one for Logan Sargeant, who lost his first lap for exceeding track limits, spun out during his second effort, and encountered a technical problem on his final attempt. This left him at the back of the grid without a time.
The stage is now set for an exciting race on Sunday, with Perez looking to continue his good form and extend his team’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship. Verstappen, on the other hand, will have a lot of ground to make up if he hopes to stay ahead in the Drivers’ Championship. It promises to be an exciting and unpredictable race, with plenty of opportunities for drivers to make their mark and fight for valuable points.
