The much-awaited 2023 Formula One season is about to kick-off with Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be the 19th time the Bahrain International Circuit has hosted the event. Fans can expect plenty of action as drivers and their teams vie for a quick start to the season.
Bahrain International Circuit boasts 15 corners and three long straights, making it an excellent venue for overtaking. Lewis Hamilton, the British driver, will be looking to add to his five victories at the circuit, the most by any driver.
Interestingly, the Bahrain Grand Prix was built on a former camel farm. The track cost roughly $150 million and required additional measures to offset the danger of sand on the circuit. To combat this, organizers imported a particular type of extra-grippy aggregate from a quarry in Shropshire. Additionally, they spray a sticky substance on the surrounding desert to keep sand from blowing onto the track. These measures ensure that drivers can race safely and reduce the risk of accidents caused by sand on the track.

First Grand Prix hosted: 2004 (2010 GP race used the Endurance Circuit) Numbers of laps: 57
Circuit length: 5,412km
Total race length: 308,238km
Lap record: 1:31.447 by Pedro de la Rosa in 2005
The race was moved to a night event in 2014 for its tenth anniversary and has remained so since. While alcohol is not banned in Bahrain, the podium finishers are sprayed with a non-alcoholic rosewater drink called Waard. As far as the weather is concerned, Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled just before the onset of the much hotter summer season. Daytime temperatures are usually between 25-30°C (75-85°F), with a meagre chance of rainfall. All grandstands at Bahrain International Circuit are covered to shield them from the sun.
The big question on everyone’s mind is how good or bad the teams will perform. Red Bull and Aston Martin had better pre-season tests than most, while McLaren and Mercedes struggled. While Max Verstappen looks favourite to win the opening race of the season, Fernando Alonso is tipped to do well, but we’ll have to wait and see who comes out on top, as always. The introduction of new technical regulations was expected to reduce the field spread, but the gap between the front runners and the rest of the field still remains a concern. We’ll have to wait and see what the situation is in the midfield.
All in all, the Bahrain Grand Prix promises to be an exciting event, with drivers and their teams looking to make a strong start to the 2023 season.
